ColourPop Lippies and Lippie Pencils - Purples and Other Unconventional Colors

ColourPop lippies and lippie pencils are a great addition to anyone's makeup collection because they are high-quality cruelty-free, gluten-free products, which, at $5 USD a piece, are very affordable. They are generally highly pigmented and buildable to full opacity.

The lippies come in different finishes, ranging from matte to hyper glossy to créme to satin. They have a scent like vanilla which is not overpowering and seems to fade over time.

All of the following swatches were done with only clear lip balm between swatches. Other than that, only the colors that came with a pencil were paired with liners in order to give a more realistic impression of what the colors look like on their own.

Brills (Lippie Pencil)

Brills is a beautiful light lilac color that is great for lining the lips for similar colors like Nars Dominique, Bite Thistle or Bite Spritzer. I have used this one quite a bit, and as a liner, it is fantastic, although I would not wear it like this as a lipstick, as it would be quite drying over time.

Grind (matte)

Grind is a gorgeous bright pinky purple that has enough blue in it not to lean too pink. Although I would not call this one matte, it is beautiful and very comfortable to apply and wear. It is highly pigmented and can be easily built to full opacity.

Plastics (matte)

Again, I would not call Plastics matte, but it is a beautiful berry purple that applies and wears very comfortably. As you can see, it is quite pigmented and does not settle into lip lines.

Leather (matte) + Leather Lippie Pencil

I have used the Leather Lippie Pencil for lining my lips for other dark purple lipsticks such as Bite Beauty's Berry Rouge. I find the Leather Lippie to be a bit drying and not very pigmented upon application, as it settles into lines and drags when applying. That being said, I would recommend the Lippie Pencil but not the Lippie in this case.

Dalia (Lippie to Go Lippie + Pencil Duo)

I mistakenly sorted Dalia in with the purples because it appears dark purple in the tube, and I had forgotten that it applies as a dark oxblood red color. The color is nice, but as with the other duos, this one drags upon application and is rather drying. That being said, the duos are nice for trying out new colors but are not a good indication of how the normal lippies and lippie pencils apply and wear.

Nevermind (matte) + Nevermind Lippie Pencil

The Nevermind Lippie Pencil is one of my favorites for lining my lips for my Bite Beauty lipstick in Black Truffle or even for their other darker purples like Elderberry, but as you can see, the Nevermind Lippie is a bit drying, and it is patchy upon application. I need to sharpen the Lippie Pencil here, which is why the lines are also quite unsharp in the picture.

Feminist (matte)

Feminist is a nice dark purple, but it has quite a bit of slip to it and applies rather streaky, as you can see in the picture. It would be paired nicely with the Nevermind Lippie Pencil or even with its own, as I think that ColourPop has a Feminist Lippie Pencil, as well.

Charm (satin) + Charm Lippie Pencil
Charm is a beautiful mint green that is completely unnecessary but fun to have, nonetheless. As you can see, it is quite pigmented, and the Lippie Pencil helps a great deal for precise application. It would also be paired nicely with LimeCrime's Mint to Be.

Bunny (pearlized)

Bunny is quite sheer, which is not the best for this type of color. Even though I am generally not a fan of sparkles, I thought that it was nice that these sparkles are green. I can really only imagine wearing this for St. Patty's Day, but since I have other greens that are much more pigmented, I would still reach for any of them before this one.

Bullchic (matte) + Bullchic Lippie Pencil

As can be seen in the picture, Bullchic is a bit patchy upon application, which is also never good for a black lipstick. For the price of $5USD, however, this is better than other lipsticks at higher pricepoints, such as Pristine from Illamasqua, for example.

Call Me (Créme Gel Liner)

Somehow when I opened Call Me to swatch it on my arm, the tip flew out and landed somewhere on the floor. I had never used the liner before so it must have either come broken or broken in transit. It is a nice brown, but I would never have bought it on my own had it not come for free with one of my purchases.

Swerve (Créme Gel Liner)

Swerve is another one that is not extremely impressive and that I would not have bought had it not come for free with one of my purchases.

I realized when trying on the last two liners that they are most likely meant for the eyes and not the lips, but I don't think that I would wear them for the eyes, either, as I tend to wear liquid eye liners. Moreover, these were not very unique colors, and they did not have very impressive pigmentation on my lips, if that can be used as any indication of how they would apply on eyelids.

Summary
ColourPop has a lot of great products, and at roughly $5USD apiece, you really cannot go wrong. There is some significant variance in the finish and formula between colors, but many are nice alternatives for other more expensive lipsticks. In addition, ColourPop is cruelty free, which makes their products even more appealing.

Brunch (Lippie to Go Lippie + Pencil Duo)

Brunch is a gorgeous neon coral color that is a close dupe for Bite Beauty's Tangerine from the Luminous Crème line. Personally, I had been getting worried about finding a good replacement for my Tangerine lipstick, which is running low, but I was excited to see that this is such a close dupe for it. Unlike many of my other duos from ColourPop, this one is creamy and not as drying as the rest. In that way, it feels like most of the normal lippies.

Luau (hyper glossy)

Luau is a lovely, yellow-toned orange that looks very nice, but it applies very sheer and streaky and takes quite a bit to build up to an acceptable opacity. Due to its sheerness, I would probably not buy this again myself, but it might be nice for people who want a sheerer orange.

Chi-Chi (Lippie Pencil)

Chi-Chi is a beautiful orange-red pencil that is quite matte and drying by itself, but as a liner for similar colors, it is fabulous.

Frenchie (Lippie to Go Lippie + Pencil Duo)

Frenchie is a beautiful, bold, true red that is unfortunately a bit drying but beautiful, nonetheless. The formula of the lippie is likely less drying than in the duo, as many of the duos are strangely stiff and drying, but I cannot confirm that for a fact, since I don't have Frenchie as a full-sized lippie.

Jingle (matte)

Jingle is a creamy, bold red that is softer than I had expected, hence the sloppy lip lines. It is quite a nice color, and it is comfortable to wear.

Confetti (hyper glossy)

Confetti is a blue-toned, sheer red that takes a bit of work to reach opacity. It was very soft, which made the edges turn out rather sloppy, but surely a liner would help this quite a bit.

TGIF (matte)

TGIF is a brick red that is lovely and applies easily. This one was stiff enough not to make the lip lines so difficult to define, yet soft enough to glide on effortlessly.

Poison (matte)

Poison is a nice brown-toned red color, but it applies quite unevenly and settles quickly into lines. As you can see, it also was a bit streaky, even around the edges of my lips.

Cheers (matte)

Cheers looked like a basic red in the tube, but as you can see, it turns out to be more of a fushia color on my lips. The color is lovely, nevertheless, but it is a bit streaky near the center of my lips.

Lady (matte)

Lady is a brown-based color that looks more brown-red in the tube than it does when applied, but I rather like the way that it applies quite a bit better than what I had imagined it to be.

Tutu (matte)

Tutu looks like a dark brown-red in the tube, but it applies as a rich berry color. It is a nice, plummy red berry that I think would look suit a variety of skintones nicely.

Summary
The ColouPop Lippies and Lippie Pencils are great, especially given their affordable price point. Some of them are stiffer or softer than others, and I have to say that I much prefer the matte and crème finishes to the hyper glossy finish, because I find the hyper glossy lipsticks to be sheerer and streakier when applied, even if their bullets are quite stiff.

ColourPop Lippies and Lippie Pencils - Nudes to Browns

ColourPop lippies and lippie pencils are a great addition to anyone's makeup collection because they are high-quality cruelty-free, gluten-free products, which, at $5 USD a piece, are very affordable. They are generally highly pigmented and buildable to full opacity.

The lippies come in different finishes, ranging from matte to hyper glossy to créme to satin. They have a scent like vanilla which is not overpowering and seems to fade over time.

Because I have far too many of the lippies and lippie pencils to swipe and review at once without rubbing my lips raw between swipes, I have divided mine into color groups: nudes to browns, oranges and reds, pinks and berries, and other non-traditional colors.

Today, I am beginning with the nudes and browns. First, you will see the arm swatches, followed by the lip swatches. Normally, I do not swatch lipsticks with liners to show their truest colors, but in this case, whenever I had the corresponding liner, I have swatched the liner with the lippie. As you can see below, not all lippie pencils match the lippies completely because some are presumably meant to complement the lippie colors without matching completely.

Nudes to Browns

Primer

This time, I decided against posting a picture of my naked lips for comparison, as the primer is clear. As such, it does not add any color or shine to my lips. At first, I thought that the primer might be a good substitute for a lip balm, but it is more matte than a balm, which makes it good for helping lipsticks to stay in place.

Last Call (créme)

Last Call has a creamy finish and is a beautiful, cool-toned nude that might wash many people out a bit. I really rather like this one, and I could see myself wearing this on an everyday basis.

Brink (Lippie to Go Lippie + Pencil Duo)

Brink is a warm-toned peachy nude that is quite lovely. However, this one, as with my other Lippit to Go Duos, tugged quite a bit on application and felt a bit drying.

Oh Snap (matte)

Oh Snap is a very light nude that has peachy undertones. I was very excited about this one, and it did not disappoint. It is not a classic matte, as it is a bit more creamy, but it is not too creamy and stays in place well.

Lumiere (matte)

Lumiere is said to be a mauve, which is fairly accurate, but I had pictured it being less pink on my lips. It is a beautiful color, nonetheless, and it is comfortable to wear.

Baewatch (matte)

Baewatch is a light berry pink that I would not have purchased on its own, but it is lovely and comfortable to wear.

Wet (Lippie Pencil)

I only have the Lippie Pencil in Wet, and alone, it is quite matte and dry, as you can see. However, it works very well as a liner for my greige lipsticks. I would not recommend wearing this alone, as it would be too drying, but as a liner, it is great.

Get Paid (Créme Gel Liner)

I am honestly not sure whether this was supposed to be for the lips or the eyes, as I have two colors that I received as free samples, and there is a good possibility that they are for the eyes. That being said, Get Paid is a beautiful copper that could be paired with a gloss for a dramatic effect or used to layer with other lipsticks for an interesting twist on other colors.

Tootsie (matte + Lippie Pencil)

Tootsie is a lovely nude greige that I adore. I am so glad that I have both the pencil and the lippie in this one because they match perfectly and complement my complection.

Cookie (matte)

I was excited to get my hands on Cookie. It is a yellow-based light nude that I thought would be gorgeous. Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed to find that it separates at the middle of my lips, where they are a bit more moist. No matter how many swipes I applied, I always ended up with this patchiness in the center of my lips. The primer would likely help this issue somewhat, but as I tend to be more lazy with my nudes, that is more effort than I wanted to put in for this particular color.

Button (Lippie to Go Lippie + Pencil Duo)

Button is a peachy nude that is a nice color, but again, just like the other duos that I have, it is more drying than the full-sized lippies.

Choker (créme)

Choker is a nice, light nude that is creamy and easy to wear. In terms of opacity, it isa bit sheer and almost patchy, but because it is so nude, that is not as noticeable on my lips. On more pigmented lips, this may, however, be an issue.

Ruffle (matte)

Ruffle is one of the colors that I was the most excited about, as it is a unique tan-brown that I have not found from many lines, except my Bite Beauty Multistick in Honeywehat, which is fairly similar.

Mosh Pit (matte)














Mosh Pit is a nice MLBB color for me. It is a mauvy nude with a hint of brown that makes it wearable for any occasion.

Taurus (matte + Lippie Pencil)

Taurus is a lovely warm brown that was a pleasant surprise for me, as I have quite a few red-based browns, but this one leans more yellow than the others that I have, making it more unique.

Grunge (matte + Lippie Pencil)

Grunge is another slightly darker MLBB color or me. To me, Grunge can be worn any time, any place, which makes it a great addition to any lipstick collection.

Pitch (matte)
 
Pitch is a more classic, red-based brown, which is similar to others that I have. My only issue with this one is that itt was much more sheer than I expected, and it settled into lines quickly. That being said, this is the only one that I would not recommend, as it is not very unique, and it does not deliver opacity or matte texture. Then again, I suppose I could have gotten one from a bad batch.


Summary
Overall, the Lippies and the Lippie Pencils from ColourPop are a great deal. At $5USD per lippie and per pencil, these are absolutely worth trying out, and their pigmentation and quality matches that of many higher-end lipstick brands.

There are always new rotations of colors available at ColourPop, but many colors seem to re-appear with different names and only very slight color changes, which is why these swatches remain relevant, even if these particular lippies or pencils become discontinued.
